Grief affects everyone at some point in their life. One of our goals is to create a community around death and dying so that children do not feel alone while they grieve. At Our Center, we provide individual grief counseling and grief support groups, but we recognize that not all children can come to Our Center for support.
Supporting Kidds offers our grief support groups in schools, community centers, and churches throughout the state. We send trained facilitators to lead the group at the school during the school day. The school-based grief groups are Healing Pathways and Pathways Through Life. These groups are each 6 weeks long and serve students who are grieving the death of a significant person either a parent, sibling, close friend, or relative.
Just as we support children/teens in their schools we also have support for teachers, school psychologists, nurses, and other staff members. We can provide Survival Kits to schools and provide community support and education to those who come into contact with children who are coping with loss. On some occasions, we have gone to schools for extra support after a tragic loss in the school.
Healing Pathways
During this time together we will discuss topics such as understanding we are all in the group because someone has died, understanding feelings, remembering the person who died, embracing change and the future, and more.
Pathways Through Life
Pathways Through Life is the follow-up program to Healing Pathways. This is an additional 6-week program that focuses more on coping skills, moving forward with their grief journey, healthy communication, managing feelings, and big life events/ milestones.
School Survival Kits
Our School Survival Kit entitled, Helping Students Cope with Grief in the School Setting, provides information on how schools address bereavement in the school setting.
Community Support
Sometimes finding the right words to talk to a child about death is hard. Supporting Kidds offers education and consultation services to community members who may come into contact with grieving children and families. We provide support and education to teachers and other school professionals, psychotherapists, funeral home staff, daycare providers, religious leaders, pediatricians, and nurses.
