Helping Children Cope

Children experience overwhelming feelings when someone close to them dies - sadness, confusion, shock, fear, anger, guilt and worry. In the midst of these reactions, children must also struggle with the reality of what has happened and manage a multitude of changes in their daily routines that accompany loss.

Children look to adults for cues on dealing with their new circumstances following a death. Yet parents and guardians often feel just as overwhelmed or unsure about how to help support them.  Supporting Kidds can help.

Programs offered by Supporting Kidds

To be directly responsive to the needs of the community, we offer an evolving menu of programs and services, both at the center and in collaboration with interested sites that serve children.  For more detailed information on a specific program, please click on the links at the bottom of this page.

♥ A Supporting Kidds Survival Kit for families, which includes written information about children and grief that can be used right away.

♥ A School Survival Kit that can assist school personnel in understanding bereaved children and in educating children about death and grief.

♥ A Healing Pathways grief support group program for bereaved children ages 5 to 18 and their caregivers.

♥ A Pathways Through Life educational series for children and families that covers a range of topics beyond bereavement.

♥ A opportunity for fun Family Gatherings so children and families can enjoy time together at the Center.

♥ A Guiding Pathways counseling service that provides children and families with more individualized support.

 ♥ A state-of-the-art Lending Library.

Consultation services to professionals that may come into contact with grieving children, such as teachers, psychotherapists, funeral home staff, day care providers, religious leaders, pediatricians, nurses, and school counselors.

Educational programs for the larger community related to supporting grieving children.

Information and referral services to assist grieving children and families in locating additional services and materials that can be helpful as they adjust to their loss.

There is a modest fee for our program services, but no one is turned away for financial reasons. Supporting Kidds relies on private donations from individuals and corporations, special fundraising events, foundation grants and donations through individual United Way allocations.
