Supporting Kidds

The Center for Grieving Children and Their Families

Healing Pathways

Our 6-week bereavement support group, Healing Pathways, represents the cornerstone of Supporting Kidds' prevention-based support programs. Healing Pathways provides grieving children the opportunity to spend time with same-aged peers who are experiencing similar situations. This program addresses multiple topics and issues pertaining to the normal grief process, and thus is appropriate for all children grieving the loss of an immediate family member - it is not simply for those who are experiencing considerable challenges in their grief. This program is open to grieving children, ages 5-18, and their caregivers.

Please see below for our Fall 2017 schedule!

The keys to our successful support program are: a structured curriculum that is based on the most up-to-date research in childhood bereavement and that children are able to meet, share and learn from their peers who are also trying to cope with the death of a loved one.

Together, in a safe and supportive environment, children begin to understand that their feelings and reactions are normal, and that they can learn to deal with the difficult emotional and life changes they are experiencing.

Our Healing Pathways programs are led by dedicated volunteers, who are trained and supervised by our Clinical Director.  Children are grouped by age with approximately 5-7 other children and two adult leaders.  Each group follows a curriculum that has been designed specifically for the children's developmental level.

During the children's groups, parents and guardians meet with the purpose of providing emotional support and education on how to help their bereaved children.

Many of our volunteers have led groups for several years at Supporting Kidds; others may be involved in post graduate programs in psychology, mental health or counseling.  All volunteers draw upon their own childhood experiences with loss as they lead the children in activities such as art, music, movement, writing, games and discussions.

  • This program meets for a six-week period, one night per week, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
  • This program currently serves children between the ages of 5 and young adult.
  • A parent or legal guardian is required to attend a concurrent adult group.

Healing Pathways is open to new and returning families.

New Healing Pathways support groups begin every Spring and every Fall.   Please contact us to enroll: 302-235-5544 or email us .
